Multiplication and Division Properties of Inequalities

When you multiply or divide an inequality by a positive number, it remains true.

Let's try to solve the inequality below:

4x > 8

All we have to do is divide each side by 4.

x > 2

Any value of x that is greater than 2 will work as a solution for the original inequality.

What if we have the following equation?

-4x > 8

All we have to do is divide each side by (-4). However, when you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, the inequality symbol must be reversed.

x < -2

Any value of x that is less than (-2) will work as a solution for the original inequality.
