Above, we have a mixed expression. It consists of a monomial and a rational expression.

To work with a mixed expression, we need to change the entire thing to a rational expression.

We do this by finding the Least Common Multiple(LCM).

The least common multiple is (x + 2). By adding this to our monomial, it now has the same denominator as the rational expression and can be added:
